Solar PV - What to Consider

This page provides some guidance to help you (and us) establish the suitability of PV for your site.

If you don’t have the information nor are not sure what we mean, we can discern quite a lot using aerial mapping tools such as Google earth and at some point in the process we will need to visit your site anyway.

·         Orientation – if the PV array is to be roof mounted, is the roof North, East, South, West facing?

·         Roof slope or design – is your roof sloping or flat? What is the roofing material - felt, tiled, bitumen, aluminium, plastic?

·         Shading – are there any trees, neighbouring buildings or items on your roof (if roof mounted) such as air-conditioning units which shade the proposed area?

·         Structural – once we’ve established the theoretically size of the PV array, we will need to confirm that the roof can withstand the weight. If you have up to date structural drawings to hand, this can speed things up.

·         Location of switch room or incoming power supply – this will help with indicative prices. A short cable run to the switch room/transformer/fuse box will be cheaper than if it’s further away.

·         Size of available space – in very approximate terms, how much roof or ground space is available. With this information we can provide a quick estimate of the size and cost of the PV array which can be installed.
