Solar panels are constructed from layers of silicon which is a semi-conducting material. When sunlight shines on the panel it forms an electric current. The brighter the sunlight, the better it is in terms of how much electricity is generated. Solar panels are generally mounted on a roof or can be free standing on a frame. The panels are grouped together and are fixed with special mounting kits or frameworks, solar tiles are also available that replace conventional roof tiles. Tracking devices are also available which move to track the sunlight thus taking maximum advantage of the light available during daylight hours.
